After years of extensive travel in their sailboat with their children, the owners, an experienced commercial construction superintendent and his wife, saw the home in Coastal Living Magazine and fell in love. Premier East Coast Architect, Chuck Dietche, designed the house, which was originally built on the outer islands of North Carolina. They obtained the plans and modified them slightly for Northwest family living. The screened porch was exchanged for a large open balcony and the three master suites traded for a larger laundry room and a traditional bedroom layout.

What the owners preserved though, is the unique combination of the casual feel and imminent livability of a beachfront cottage with the elegant and sophisticated style of Nantucket-influenced home. Intentionally given a nautical feel, the Bainbridge Island home is unique enough to catch the eye while still fitting ideally in its surroundings. Just 2 years old, the classic home looks as though it has stood the test of time, and it will.

What the Owners Love
“One of the best things about this house is that it’s so light and so warm. It faces south, which means the house and yard are flooded with light for most of the day. The large number of windows and their large size also makes the space so light, bright, and inviting.”
“I love the Great Room concept upstairs. We chose house plans with the main living area upstairs to take full advantage of our views and to allow us these high ceilings, but we didn’t realize how many other benefits this concept offers. Since heat rises, this area is the warmest in the home, and it is, of course where the family naturally spends the most time. The bedroom floor stays cool during the hot summer months – ideal for sleeping.”
“The Skogen Lane neighborhood is fabulous. We know everyone on the road by name. We feel safe allowing our son to wander the neighborhood, knowing he’s got a lot of watchful eyes on him.”
“We love to entertain, and the Great Room is the ideal venue. Once a year we throw a big birthday party – and often have 50-60 people, yet the room holds them all and the huge kitchen and bar make it the perfect gathering place.”
“I love the high windows that let in views of the water and the sky.”
