Welcome to 15193 Skogen Lane
If you love old-world charm combined with modern conveniences, classic homes with modern flair, timeless style with an updated edge, a beach cottage feel with space to entertain, and something just a bit out of the ordinary, you’ve found a special place to call home.
This newly constructed home is elegantly executed, equipped with every amenity, and lovingly maintained.
Flexible Living Space – Within the home – there are five rooms capable of serving as a bedroom: one upstairs, 3 on the main floor, and one on the lower floor. Whether you’re looking for an extra master suite, a traditional bedroom arrangement, or a larger “teen suite” – this house can accommodate! The house is served by a four-bedroom septic – three bedrooms in the main home and one in the guest loft.
Come On In – The Entry -
Walk up the stairs to a large columned covered porch with a classic painted beaded-board ceiling and wide (sustainably farmed) Brazilian Redwood decking. It’s large enough for your Adirondack chairs, potted plants, and more. The 8’ glass plated front door was custom etched by a local Island artist and shows a large nautical compass with accurate orientation.
The generous entry way offers a sweet nook with bay window, ideal for relaxing and reading. Follow the elegant staircase up to the Great Room and office/media room. The reverse floor plan of this home was chosen to allow the property to take full advantage of the water view and to provide the structure for a magnificent vaulted 14’ ceiling.
Come Upstairs! –
The Great Room is, well, Grand! Forty feet long by twenty feet wide, the room is filled with light from all four sides – including a south facing wall of glass. The elegant angled 14’ ceilings are covered in beaded-board and arches frame the entrance and fireplace. One end of the room hosts the kitchen and enormous granite breakfast bar. The other end is home to the large Heat N ‘Glow propane fireplace and matching granite hearth. The mantle is a work of art in Honduran Mahogany – simple, elegant, masterful. A 48” nautical-themed ceiling fan adds to the décor and helps circulates the warmth from the fire.
To call this a gourmet kitchen might be an understatement. Twenty feet long, with double ovens, a French-door refrigerator, 48” gas cook top, matching stainless dishwasher, and huge stainless sink make cooking and cleanup truly enjoyable. The owners, avid entertainers, say they’ve often had four cooks (and several onlookers) working simultaneously in the kitchen – with great results! Honed black granite countertops bring an understated elegance to the space and alder cabinets ideally complement the Quartersawn Brazilian Cherry hardwood floors that extend throughout the Great Room.
A large pantry with built in heavy-duty quiet-close drawers provides additional storage, and the magnetic chalkboard door offers a practical and whimsical spot to post notes and lists. An ‘electronic dustpan’, part of the home’s built-in vacuum system, is tucked in the cabinetry beneath the kitchen sink. Just tap it to open and sweep crumbs inside!
At the center of the great room is an open dining area complemented by three glass pendant lights. There’s room for the whole family and then some! An 8’ glass door opens from this area to a sweet balcony, large enough for a BBQ (there’s even a propane outlet!) and full-size dining table and chairs. This deck is Brazilian Redwood, an extraordinarily hard wood that when oiled has a deep red hue, and when left to age naturally, develops a patina similar to teak. The balcony overlooks the large, level yard and offers close up views of Port Madison Bay.
Built in cabinetry flanks the fireplace, offering storage for games, movies, and stereo equipment. The living room surrounds the fireplace, and the large windows were ideally positioned to offer water views even while seated. Two sets of quality speakers hidden in the ceiling bring surround sound to the room.
Also upstairs is a large bedroom/office/media room with delightful arch feature and walk-in closet. The owners use this room as a guest room and home office, although it could easily serve as a second master suite. French doors office privacy from the rest of the home.
A full bath serves the upper floor, and is tucked beneath the eves giving it a wonderful angled ceiling complete with an opening skylight. An awning window lets additional fresh air and light into the area. Custom almond and white tile work and granite countertops make this a soothing, elegant space.
Bedroom Floor – On the first floor of the home are the bedrooms and laundry room – with 10’ ceilings in all rooms. The large master suite offers water views and deck access. The master bath has a sunken Jacuzzi tub, separate tiled double-shower stall, and double sinks. Grey and white porcelain tiles with a black granite counter bring a sophisticated look. Beneath the tiled shower floor, hydronic heating tubes were placed in the slab. Imagine stepping into the shower onto a warm tile floor!
The laundry room is festive with black and white checkered tile floors, ocean-blue walls, and white beaded-board cabinetry. A full-light door leads out onto the lower deck which runs the length of the home. A hot and cold faucet outside the door makes for fast and comfortable clean up of sandy feet or the dog! Steps on both ends of the deck deliver quick access to the grassy yard.
Two additional ample bedrooms ensure there’s room for everyone and are served by a third full bathroom. Subway tiles surround the tub and continue around the room as wainscoting. A white marble vanity and black and white tile floor complete the room.
The Downstairs Bonus –
The basement of the home is a true bonus room in every sense of the word. Concrete slab floors, stained a soothing blue are heated via the home’s hydronic heating system, making it warm even on cold winter mornings. A large rec-room provides ample space for games, crafts, television, and exercise equipment and benefits from full-light double doors leading in to the side yard.
A separate finished room, used as a workshop by the owners, would also serve as a hobby room, home office, or additional sleeping room.
A large mechanical room completes the basement layout and is home to the heating system and boiler, hot water heater, whole house fan, and built-in vacuum. This room is unheated, and maintains an average temperature of about 56 degrees, making it ideal for a wine cellar. Ample dry storage racks hold camping and sporting gear, holiday decorations, and much, much more.
The Guest Loft & Garage –
Above the home’s detached garage is an 800 square foot, one bedroom, and 1 ¾ bath suite – ideal for either guests or a home business. There is even a kitchenette with full-sized refrigerator and dishwasher. Want your mother-in-law close, but not too close? Have guests for the holidays or the summer? Want to work from home in a dedicated office space with room for clients and meetings? This is it. The Guest Loft also boasts views of the bay. Sliding glass doors open onto a large deck, giving this space all the comforts of home. Below the Guest loft is a detached two-car garage offering
additional shop space with storage. Both the home and the garage have high-quality 50 year roofing.
“Hidden” Features – Visit the home and you’ll quickly fall captive to its appeal and amenities. Here’s a list of a few of the features you may not immediately notice: (Read More about the Home’s Architectural Design Inspiration)
- Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilator/ Fan: a huge improvement over a whole house fan, acts as a central exhaust fan for bathrooms and laundry room and supplies fresh outdoor air to the home’s living area. The built-in heat exchanger warms the outdoor air against the exhaust, saving energy. Filters trap particles ensuring clean incoming air. The fan may be run on low continuously, year-round. Rather than loud exhaust fans in the bathrooms, a small button kicks the fan up to high for a period of 20 minutes. It’s quiet and extremely effective.
- Hydronic/Radiant Heat: Simple and energy efficient radiant heat system warms the floors throughout the home. Each floor is a zone, allowing you to set and maintain the right temperature for each space. It’s a clean, quiet, highly effective heating system that requires no maintenance.
Built-in Vacuum: Outlets throughout the home make cleanup simple and easy. Electronic dustpan in the kitchen makes quick clean-ups simple.- Individual Well: Home is served by a private well that delivers an abundant supply of fresh, great-tasting water. A new well pump was installed in 2009.
